At the Louvre (France), five centuries of music in Zurbarán’s light and shadow

To coincide with the major retrospective Zurbarán 1598–1664, running from 7 October 2026 to 25 January 2027, the Louvre is also bringing the sounds of Spain to its Auditorium Michel Laclotte. The Siècles d’or et d’ombre (Ages of Gold and Shadow) series comprises five concerts conceived as musical extensions of the exhibition, spanning the Spanish Golden Age to contemporary creation.

Cantoría and Jorge Losana open the series on 7 October, making their Louvre debut with Les musiques de Zurbarán, a journey through the splendours of Iberian music at the end of the Golden Age. On 25 November, flamenco singer Arcángel joins the Quatuor Diotima for a contemporary take on flamenco bringing Sotelo, Adámek and Ravel into dialogue.

At the piano, Tanguy de Williencourt will bring together Granados’s Goyescas and the mysticism of Mompou’s Música Callada on 4 December. A return to earlier traditions follows on 13 January with Jordi Savall and Hespèrion XXI in Séville entre mondes et mers, ranging from Ortiz, Guerrero, Sanz and de Murcia to the echoes of Spanish music in the New World; the concert will be recorded by French radio (France Musique).

Finally, guitarist Thibaut Garcia, joined notably by fellow guitarist Antoine Morinière and cellist Jérémie Garbarg, will close the series on 22 January with a ‘neo-Baroque’ celebration centred on Albéniz and Quiroga. From viola da gamba to guitar, from song and flamenco to the modern piano, five centuries of Spanish music will respond to the golds, shadows and striking chiaroscuro of Zurbarán.
