In Vancouver (Canada), the Return of the Festive Cantatas of Early Music

→The Festive Cantatas of Early Music Vancouver are back for the holiday season with a performance combining Bach’s ‘Gloria in excelsis Deo’ and the ‘Missa Nativitatis Domini’ by Czech composer Jan Dismas Zelenka, at the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts on December 22 at 3:00 PM.

These two festive works will be performed by the Pacific Baroque Orchestra and the Vancouver Chamber Choir, with soloists Hélène Brunet, Suzie LeBlanc, Cecilia Duarte, James Reese, and William Kraushaar.

Bach’s Gloria in excelsis Deo is the only church cantata written by the composer with a Latin text, entirely based on the Gloria from his Mass in B Minor. The work had an unusual premiere in Leipzig on Christmas Day 1745 to celebrate the Treaty of Dresden.
