Montreal: Les Idées heureuses celebrate their 40th anniversary

Founded in 1987 by harpsichordist and musicologist Geneviève Soly, Les Idées heureuses open their 40th season with five events combining remembrance and renewal. Artistic direction passed to Dorothéa Ventura three years ago, and for this anniversary she has devised a programme that looks back at the ensemble’s history while remaining open to new encounters.

The season opens on 4 October at Montreal’s Bourgie Hall with Alla polacca, a programme devoted entirely to Telemann’s fascination with Polish music: suites and concertos will be directed from the violin by Olivier Brault, with Vincent Lauzer and Alexa Raine-Wright among the recorder players. On 8 November, a grand gala will pay tribute to Geneviève Soly and the artists who have contributed to the ensemble’s nearly 300 concerts in Canada and Europe.

The rest of the season readily embraces invention: in February, RSVP! will invite the audience to choose part of the programme; on 27 March, Geneviève Soly will continue, for the fifth year, her complete cycle of Christoph Graupner’s Good Friday cantatas. Finally, on 5 May, Chaconne et chocolat : délectations arabes will bring European Baroque and Arab musical traditions into dialogue, with Lamia Yared and Haitham Haidar. A lively way to celebrate forty years devoted as much to rediscovery as to passing on the heritage of early music.
