The Erasmus klingt! festival in Basel, from 6 to 13 September 2026, is a biennial interdisciplinary event celebrating the legacy of Erasmus of Rotterdam, who lived and died in Basel. For this third edition of ‘Erasmus klingt! – Festival Lab’, Erasmus’s travelogues will serve as a source of inspiration for numerous concerts and events on the theme of ‘Viaggio’ – Erasmus on a journey during the Renaissance – echoing Erasmus’s nomadic life between Basel, Paris, London and Venice.
Organised as a cultural laboratory, the festival features early music concerts (16th–early 18th centuries), readings, discussions and guided tours. In addition to the festival’s nine main concerts – featuring Giardino Armonico/Giovanni Antonini, Capella Mediterraneo/Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Constellation Choir/John Eliot Gardiner, Vox Luminis/Lionel Meunier, Il Caravaggio/ Camille Delaforge, etc.) – the focus this year is once again on close collaboration with the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis: no fewer than two projects provide a platform for students and young artists from this prestigious early music institute in Basel. On 11 September at 10.00 pm, the ‘Late Night’ concert ‘Vidimus Stellam’ will see students from AVES – the ‘Master of Advanced Vocal Ensemble Studies’ programme at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis – perform the rich and varied repertoire of Renaissance and Baroque vocal ensemble music.
To bring the festival to a close, on 13 September at 6 pm, the Don Bosco Music and Cultural Centre will be transformed into an 18th-century opera house: students from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis will stage Niccolò Jommelli’s operatic satire, ‘La Critica’, with musical direction by Andrea Marcon and directed by Deda Cristina Colonna.
