On 3 October, the Auditorium-Orchestre national de Lyon will officially launch its new “Česko” season, devoted to Czech music, with a visit from Václav Luks’s Collegium 1704, the Czech Republic’s leading period-instrument ensemble.
The choice of Collegium 1704 to open this Czech season is no coincidence: Václav Luks’s ensemble has made the rediscovery of its country’s musical heritage one of its principal areas of exploration. Zelenka, the “Catholic Bach”, is one of its particular favourites. The ensemble’s very name refers to 1704, the year in which this composer from Central Bohemia burst onto Prague’s musical scene. Thirty-five years later, he composed his Missa votiva, whose 2005 recording by the ensemble caused a considerable stir, revealing music of contrasting emotions and radiant, virtuosic writing. The young Handel’s celebrated Dixit Dominus completes this invigorating programme.
The “Česko” season follows the 2025–26 Polish season. The Auditorium-Orchestre national de Lyon thus continues its exploration of the music of its European neighbours, this time turning to the Czech Republic. More than simply a recurring theme, this is a genuine “season within a season”, with 46 varied events showcasing Czech composers and performers: 20 symphonic concerts, including 12 with music director Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider, 4 visiting ensembles, 12 chamber music concerts, 1 recital, 7 film-concert performances and 1 lecture…
