In Aranjuez (Spain), Baroque music returns to the Royal Palace

From Farinelli to Charles Burney, from Bach to Handel: for its 33rd edition, Música Antigua Aranjuez transforms the former Spanish royal residence into a vast Baroque stage from 2 October to 8 November. Concerts, anniversaries and rediscoveries unfold across the Royal Palace, Teatro Real Carlos III, gardens and Bodega de Carlos III.

The festival opened with Farinelli and the presentation of a new book devoted to his admission to the Order of Calatrava, before Lina Tur Bonet brought Bach to the chapel of the Royal Palace. The programme continues with Sara Ruiz and La Bellemont in Couperin, the Orquesta Barroca de Sevilla in Vivaldi, then Fahmi Alqhai and Accademia del Piacere exploring Bach’s chorales and counterpoint.

The tercentenary of Charles Burney will be celebrated on 24 October by Mariví Blasco and Speculum with Azul de Prusia, los viajes de Charles Burney, a musical evocation of the English music writer’s travels across Europe. Another highlight comes on 31 October, when Richard Egarr, Hippocampus’s new music director, sets Corelli’s and Handel’s concerti grossi side by side.

La Ritirata and Josetxu Obregón will then mark the bicentenary of Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga, before the festival closes with countertenor Manuel Ruiz and Íliber Ensemble in Handel, Vivaldi and Hasse. Bringing musical and architectural heritage together, Aranjuez also shows how music, place and landscape can still become one.
