Applications for the First “Farinelli Competition for Countertenors” at the International Handel Festival Karlsruhe

→The very first singing competition dedicated to countertenors will take place in Karlsruhe (Germany) as part of the 47th edition of the International Handel Festival from February 27 to March 2, 2025.

This competition, created in homage to the most famous singer of this vocal range, was initiated by the festival’s artistic director, Christoph von Bernuth. The Farinelli Competition is open to countertenors of all registers under the age of 35.

While focusing on baroque roles, it also includes works from later repertoires up to contemporary music. In addition to prizes awarded by a jury of five specialists, there will be concrete engagements, including at the International Handel Festival Karlsruhe in 2026 and the Bayreuth Baroque Opera Festival. The cash prizes are largely funded by members of the Handel Society.

The competition will take place at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe during the International Handel Festival. The first round, closed to the public, will take place on February 27, 2025, followed by the semi-final with a limited audience on February 28.
