From 11 to 27 September, the Ambronay Festival unfolds its 47th edition over three weekends under the banner of ‘Baroque Latitudes’. From William Christie to Jordi Savall, Leonardo García-Alarcón to Amandine Beyer, the abbey will welcome leading figures, young ensembles and repertoire from across Europe.
This edition continues what makes Ambronay distinctive: bringing major figures of early music into dialogue with younger generations, while opening the festival up to other aesthetics. Baroque remains at its heart, but this year’s ‘latitudes’ also extend the programme towards world music, staged forms and family events.
Among the highlights, Simon-Pierre Bestion and La Tempête will open the festival with an Imaginary Requiem for Charles V, followed by Biber’s Rosary Sonatas with Meret Lüthi, William Christie and Les Arts Florissants in two operas by Charpentier, Les Arts florissants and La Descente d’Orphée aux Enfers, then Bach with Amandine Beyer and Gli Incogniti, including the Brandenburg Concertos Nos 3 and 6.
The second weekend will feature La Palatine in an Italian Passion bringing together Monteverdi and the little-known Luigi Rossi, followed by Le Poème Harmonique and Eva Zaïcik in a portrait of sacred Venice, from the laudi of Razzi and Soto to Vivaldi’s Nisi Dominus. Leonardo García-Alarcón and Cappella Mediterranea will then present ROMA!, ranging from Allegri’s celebrated Miserere to Scarlatti and a rare Mass by Giovanni Giorgi.
Finally, InAlto will revisit Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 before Jordi Savall, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Hespèrion XXI bring the festival to a close with the Llibre Vermell de Montserrat. So many paths through just a few of Baroque music’s many ‘latitudes’, over the course of three weekends.
