From 26 to 28 November 2026, Naples will host the 14th edition of the “Francesco Provenzale” International Baroque Singing Competition. Founded in 2003 by the Fondazione Pietà de’ Turchini, the competition has established itself as a genuine springboard for young early-music singers: Carlo Vistoli, Silvia Frigato, Gaia Petrone and Giuseppina Bridelli are among the artists who have taken part in previous editions.
Open to singers of all voice types aged 35 or under, the competition will take place in the church of Santa Caterina da Siena, home of the Centro di Musica Antica Pietà de’ Turchini. Candidates will perform vocal repertoire from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, with particular emphasis on the Neapolitan School and its masters, from Francesco Provenzale to Alessandro Scarlatti, Pergolesi and Paisiello. Mezzo-soprano Anna Bonitatibus will chair an international jury including Eva-Maria Sens, director of the Innsbrucker Festwochen der Alten Musik, Fulvio Macciardi, superintendent of the Teatro di San Carlo, Alessandro Trebeschi, Stefano Demicheli and musicologist Paologiovanni Maione.
Three prizes of €2,500, €1,500 and €1,000 will be awarded. But the stakes go beyond the financial rewards: the first-prize winner will take part in a production by the Pietà de’ Turchini, while other candidates may be invited to join future concerts and productions organised by the Foundation and its international partners. The final on 28 November will be open to the public and followed by a prize-winners’ concert.
