From 26 to 29 November 2026, the Berliner Festival Alter Musik will make its debut in the German capital. Under the banner “Faszination Renaissance”, this inaugural edition sets out to explore an age of curiosity, exchange and intellectual upheaval, bringing historically informed performance into dialogue with a contemporary perspective.
The programme brings together a number of leading European names: Cappella Pratensis, Profeti della Quinta, Sollazzo Ensemble, The Playfords and B’Rock Orchestra & Vocal Consort, as well as Joel Frederiksen and his Ensemble Phoenix Munich, Art d’Echo, Alta Bellezza, tiefsaits, Zweigulden and the Titans Rising Ensemble.
Italian madrigals, Venetian frottolas, polyphony from the recently rediscovered Leuven Chansonnier, Jacob Obrecht’s Missa Maria zart, and music by Caspar Kittel and Heinrich Schütz: the programme offers a wide range of perspectives, even bringing Renaissance instruments face to face with contemporary synthesisers. Dance with The Playfords, shadow theatre for families and a musical trail devoted to Venetian glassmaking complete the line-up.
The festival will take over several of Berlin’s landmark venues – Villa Elisabeth, St. Elisabeth, St. Matthäus, Sophienkirche and the Kunstgewerbemuseum – with the stated ambition of giving early music a stronger presence at the heart of the city’s cultural life. Organised by the Titans Rising Verein für Alte Musik Berlin, founded in 2020, this new festival is the association’s most ambitious project to date.
