Ulrike Shapiro new Managing Director of Concerto Köln

On 1 June 2026, Ulrike Shapiro will take over as Managing Director of the long-established early music ensemble Concerto Köln. An internationally experienced cultural manager and musician, she combines strategic expertise with a deep understanding of artistic practice. Ulrike Shapiro has lived in the USA for many years and brings extensive experience in cultural management alongside a deep understanding of artistic practice. Since 2013, she has been Managing Director of Tempesta di Mare | Philadelphia Baroque Orchestra, having previously served as Managing Director there since 2006. In this role, her responsibilities included season planning, festivals and tours, fundraising and sponsorship, financial planning, communications and marketing, as well as collaboration with international partners and funding bodies
In addition to her work as a cultural manager, Shapiro is also active as an artist. She is a specialist in German pronunciation and diction and collaborates with, amongst others, the opera department of the Curtis Institute of Music and the Bach Choir of Bethlehem. She also worked for many years as a professional singer and assistant director.
Ulrike Shapiro studied singing at the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and is currently completing a distance learning course in cultural management at the German Academy
