The SPAM light (Spandau Alte Musik) festival in Berlin offers the opportunity to (re)discover the life of Johann Sebastian Bach, GDR version, during two evenings of screenings on 24 and 25 February. To mark the 300th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s birth, East German television produced a lavish series on the composer’s life in 1983/84. Ulrich Thein in the title role, Franziska Troegner as Anna Magdalena and many other renowned actors took part in this four-part series, which, with a budget of 19 million marks, became the most expensive television production in the history of the GDR. Forty years after it was first broadcast, the four episodes will be screened at the Kulturhaus in Spandau. Film expert and Bach fan Bernhard Schrammek, Knut Elstermann and actress Franziska Troegner will speak between episodes.
