An interlude and a rarity: Le Devin du village, a piece written and composed by the philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau, was performed in 1780 by the Queen of France, Marie-Antoinette, in the intimate setting of her private theatre. The work ranks among the most frequently performed operas of the eighteenth century.
