Why this title?
The ‘ true barbaric beauty ’ of the music that G.P. Telemann discovered on a trip to Silesia (Poland) in 1705 aroused great enthusiasm in him. His description of the local musicians, and in particular the pipers, is a delicious moment in his autobiography. Telemann was fascinated by their ‘marvellous inspiration when they indulge their fantasies, as soon as the dancers have rested’, to the extent that ‘someone attentive could in eight days take from them ideas for a lifetime’. That’s exactly what Telemann did, drawing abundant inspiration from these distinctive melodies to ‘dress them up in Italian costume with alternating adagios and allegros’.
