Born into a family of musicians in Italy, she was, so to speak, raised on Baroque music from her earliest years. And yet, for Anna Maddalena Ghielmi (who won second prize at the Telemann Competition in Magdeburg held from March 21 to 30), embracing historically informed performance was not something she took for granted.

You’ve just been awarded second prize at the Telemann Competition, which this year focused on historical string instruments and chamber music ensembles. How did you come to the violin, and what role did your family or background play in that?
