The Pontoise Baroque Festival (France) celebrates its 40th anniversary this autumn and confirms its originality by mixing genres. Emphasising that the adjective ‘baroque’ does not only refer to a period (between Monteverdi’s Orfeo in 1607 and Bach’s death in 1750), but that in its etymological sense it means ‘irregular, imperfect or strange’, it allows for all combinations of styles, periods and cultures. Based on this observation, the Festival Baroque de Pontoise (France) has created its own unique identity by bringing together music with dance, theatre and decorative arts from different eras. Like a total spectacle, it offers a multidisciplinary programme that reveals the diversity of the great repertoire and forgotten or little-known scores revisited by national and international ensembles. This year, the Festival opens with its 40th Anniversary Gala (27 September 2025), featuring Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, whose 300th anniversary is being celebrated in a version revisited by harpsichordist Bertrand Cuiller and his ensemble Le Caravansérail, accompanied by a host of great artists, including Emmanuelle Haïm, Philippe Jaroussky, Ophélie Gaillard.
