From 14 to 21 September 2025, the Buxtehude Days in Lübeck will take place under the motto ‘Werkmeister – Meisterwerke’ (Master Craftsmen – Masterpieces). The churches in Lübeck city centre will be entirely dedicated to the Baroque composer. This year’s highlight is the ‘Buxtehude zum Mitmachen’ (Buxtehude to discover) project with Capella de la Torre. Interested musicians will have the opportunity to work with professionals specialising in the historical interpretation of works by Buxtehude and his contemporaries, and then perform them in Lübeck Cathedral. The Lübeck Buxtehude Days were created in 2010 by Johannes Unger, organist at the cathedral and St. Mary’s Church, and have been held at irregular intervals in the city ever since.
Lunchtime and evening concerts
This year’s festival offers a varied programme with five lunchtime and five evening concerts, including performances by renowned ensembles and performers such as Ensemble 1684, Capella de la Torre, harpsichordist Christine Schornsheim and organist and conductor Ton Koopman. In addition to well-known masterpieces, lesser-known works will also be performed, including those by Johann Rosenmüller and Simone Vesi, some of whose compositions have only been preserved for posterity thanks to a copy kept in the historical library of the choir of St. Mary’s.
Two-day organ course
On 17 and 18 September 2025, a two-day organ course will be offered with Ton Koopman on the famous historic Stellwagen organ at St. Jakobi. Organists will have the opportunity to refine their interpretations of works by Buxtehude and the North German organ school with the expert. Registrations, accompanied by the prepared works, must be sent by 31 August by email to Arvid Gast (Arvid.Gast@mh-luebeck.de).
