Leipzig Bach Festival 2026 : a hit parade of 50 cantatas

Under the motto ‘Im Dialog’ (In Dialogue), the Leipzig Bach Festival – from 11 to 21 June 2026 – will feature a cycle of 50 cantatas in twelve parts, based on the principle of the good old radio hit parade. The festival will also present more than 200 events.

For the first time in the history of the Bach Festival, the global Bach community has participated in shaping a central element of the programme by voting online over several months to select the most popular Bach cantatas. The top 50 will be presented in twelve concerts, from 50th to 1st place, performed by international Bach stars such as Philippe Herreweghe, John Eliot Gardiner and Ton Koopman.

I am looking forward to this very special Bach Festival and I am really excited to discover our cantata hit parade – it will be thrilling until the very last note! ‘ said artistic director Professor Michael Maul.

A second highlight is the anniversary of ’300 Years of Clavier-Übung”: Sir András Schiff (piano) and Mahan Esfahani (harpsichord) will devote themselves to these major works in grand cycles on their respective instruments. The festival will remain true to its motto ‘Im Dialog’ (In Dialogue) and aims to be more participatory than ever. The revival of the ‘We Are Family Choir’ will also offer amateur choristers from around the world the chance to perform themselves at St. Thomas Church in 2026, with the Lufthansa Orchestra and under the baton of Rudolf Lutz.

Tickets for the 2026 Leipzig Bach Festival are available from 25 November online at www.bachfestleipzig.de.
