Artaserse by Leonardo Vinci is a landmark opera. Unearthed by Max Emanuel Cencic and recreated at the Opéra National de Lorraine in November 2012, it became one of the key events in the revival of Baroque music, praised internationally both for the quality of its singers and the brilliant staging by Silviu Purcărete.

Among Leonardo Vinci’s major works, Artaserse —a composer nearly forgotten— emerges as a true rediscovery in the Baroque opera repertoire. Inspired by the figure of the ruler Artaxerxes I, Metastasio‘s libretto was set to music many times during the 18th century, notably by Hasse, Johann Christian Bach, Galuppi, and Scarlatti, to name just the most renowned.
