The 12th edition of Les Printemps Slaves, Canada’s only festival dedicated to Slavic music, will take place from May 6 to 30, 2025, in Montreal. This year, its artistic director, Irina Krasnyanskaya, has chosen to spotlight “an unexpected and unusual theme: Slavic Baroque music.” Too often overshadowed by the major figures of Romanticism and the 20th century, this lesser-known chapter in the history of Slavic music deserves renewed attention.
The festival invites audiences to rediscover this repertoire through a series of concerts that juxtapose works by 17th- and 18th-century composers with those of 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century musicians who drew inspiration from the Baroque aesthetic.
Wittily titled “An Almost Baroque Slavic Spring”, this new edition offers a rare opportunity to discover little-known or entirely unfamiliar Slavic composers, such as Dmitri Bortniansky, one of the most prominent Ukrainian Baroque composers, whose music has likely never before been performed in Canada.
