On Wednesday 19 February, the city of Halle announced the death of the director of the Handel Festival in Halle, Bernd Feuchtner. The playwright and opera director was 75 years old.
Born in Nuremberg, Bernd Feuchtner worked for more than 20 years at various theatre and opera houses in Germany, notably in Heidelberg and Karlsruhe. More recently, he directed the Händel-Haus foundation in Halle. From May 2023, he also took over the direction of the Handel Festival in Halle.
“Since 2023, Mr Feuchtner has devoted himself with the utmost commitment, many new ideas and boundless enthusiasm to the difficult task of giving a new direction to the Händel-Haus and the festival in a crisis situation. He took part in the Handel Society’s trip to London and immediately joined the circle of Handel’s friends with his characteristic kindness and warmth. He will be greatly missed by the worldwide Handel community, writes Professor Wolfgang Hirschmann, President of the International Georg Friedrich Handel Society.
