The Importance of a Transatlantic Cooperation

Early Music America (EMA), founded in 1985 and with more than 1,500 members across North America, stands out not only for its scale but also for its original initiatives such as the EMA Summit, whose 2025 edition will be held in October in Montreal (Quebec, Canada). On the occasion of REMA-EEMN’s 25th anniversary, executive director David R. McCormick sends a message of friendship and cooperation (below), around a shared vision: that of an early-music sector not frozen in heritage, but in full collaborative expansion, seeking together to meet the challenges of funding, audiences, and recognition.

Early Music America (EMA) is the leading network for early music in North America. Founded in 1985, the organization now brings together more than 1,500 members in the United States, Canada, and Mexico: musicians, ensembles, researchers, teachers, instrument makers, presenters, and music lovers.

EMA’s mission: to develop, strengthen, and celebrate early music, from the Middle Ages to the early 19th century, by supporting those who perform, teach, and pass it on. EMA acts as a platform for professional resources, networking, and advocacy.

It publishes a quarterly journal, EMAg (Early Music America Magazine), offers grants, organizes webinars, and showcases young talent through its Young Performers Festival and its Emerging Artists Showcase.

Like REMA, EMA also presents annual Awards that recognize artists, ensembles, and scholars who have made an exceptional contribution to the vitality of the field.
