A New Thematic Portal on “Early Music” in Germany

The German Music Information Center (Deutscher Musikrat) has launched a new thematic portal dedicated to early music.

The early music scene thrives on the interaction of many different players: specialized ensembles and festivals are just as much a part of it as research institutes, educational institutions, museums, instrument makers, and music publishers.

The new thematic portal “Early Music”, developed by the German Music Information Center (miz)—an institution of the German Music Council (Musikrat)—highlights this diversity and provides an in-depth overview of the structures, historical developments, and current trends in early music. A specialized database also allows for quick access to relevant institutions, such as archives, universities, and ensembles.

The portal’s articles have been written by leading early music experts. Editorial direction was entrusted to Richard Lorber, an editor at WDR, who shaped the thematic framework by providing a comprehensive introduction as well as an overview of specialized ensembles and festivals. Other key topics covered include higher education, musicological research, publishing, and historical instrument making.

“With this new thematic portal, we aim to continue raising awareness of early music and showcasing the specialized and diverse nature of this field,” says Stephan Schulmeistrat, director of miz. “Here, tradition and innovation, research and artistic creativity come together in a unique way. In almost no other genre do scientific expertise and artistic creativity complement each other so well.”
