Handel’s ‘Acis and Galatea’ by The King’s Consort

→Part cantata, part opera and part oratorio, “Acis and Galatea” condenses Handel’s artistry into a tragic pastoral of intimate proportions. At the Midsummer Festival of Hardelot (France), The King’s Consort and Robert King bring this miniature drama back to life, performed by Sophie Junker and Joshua Ellicott.

Inspired by Ovid’s myth, Acis and Galatea tells the story of the fragile love between a shepherd and a nymph, shattered by the jealousy of the cyclops Polyphemus. Composed in 1718 for a private setting, this tragic pastoral work encapsulates Handel’s most tender and sombre side.
