Let’s continue our journey into the land of plucked strings in this new musical series. This new episode once again illustrates the wealth of timbres and combinations, featuring a variety of pieces from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The second chapter of ‘Subtle blends of plucked strings‘, features theorbo, mandolin, and baroque guitar. Intimate dialogues between these instruments are expressed through works by Kapsperger, Beretti, Santiago de Murcia and Scarlatti, depicting a Baroque Europe vibrating to the sound of strings.
Thomas Robinson‘s Twenty Waies Upon The Bels, with its refined variations on an obsessive motif, provides insight into the art of Elizabethan ornamentation. Gaspar Sanz‘s ‘Marizapalos’ and Santiago de Murcia’s ‘Marionas’ demonstrate the influence of popular dance on Iberian art music. And let’s not forget Jean Rondeau and Thomas Dunford‘s performance of Antoine Forqueray‘s ‘Jupiter’ from the 2020 album Barricades, which transcends mere instrumental dialogue: “For us, it is not about responding to each other so much as it is about questioning and inviting our listeners to join us in this exploration with no answer or resolution“. Embark on a new, immersive listening experience in HD or 4K and celebrate not only the beauty of each instrument in isolation, but also the magic that happens when they come together.
